Custom Regulated miniPSU
A while back I had the idea of modifying a regular power adapter and found an appropriate DC PSU for the task.
One could quite easily modify an AC PSU as well but you would have to wire in a FWBR (Full wave bridge rectifier).
An example of this is seen below, where it simply dropps 240vac (RMS) mains to 16vac via the transformer. I UHUed a FWBR (GBU04) to the plastic body and zip tied an over rated 200v/680uF cap and that’s across the FWBR. It gives 23.6vdc (16v*root(2) is approximately right!).
Back to the task at hand; a 7805 5vdc Vreg was soldered across the PSU output, and a 100uf capacitor was soldered across the output of the 7805 to decouple the supply.
The case was then glued back together and the lead was routed into a small Hammond project box, which was drilled in four spots for the switch, power LED, and both terminals.
I like to stick to the practice of using ‘yellow’ to indicate 12vdc and as such have used an incorrect 4mm connector; this was later changed to the classic red/black scheme indicating that this was a 5V PSU. It is capable of 1A since that is the rating of the 7805.
